You may not know whether your system has had an effluent filter installed. There are several benefits to having an effluent filter on your septic tank. Here are a few common questions you may have about effluent filters.
What is an Effluent Filter?
An Effluent Filter is a filter that is installed on the drain side of your septic tank. It helps to keep any solid waste from flowing out of your tank, causing problems in your drain field or leading to failure or clogs in your outgoing septic tank line.
Are Effluent Filters Required?
Some counties or cities do require you to install effluent filters on your septic tanks. You can check with your local Environmental Health Dept. for your area. However, you may want to consider a filter even if they are not required to keep your system in the best running order.
What Are the Benefits of an Effluent Filter?
The first is that it can help prevent failure in your septic tank. The filter helps catch any solids that can clog your outgoing drain line. If water and liquids cannot flow out of your drain line, your tank can back up or crack. Also, catching solids helps ensure these solids don’t make their way to your drain field, where bacteria issues can arise. Lastly, the filter helps to ensure the solid waste doesn’t leave the tank, which ensures the waste won’t leach into soil or clean water supplies.
What Are the Signs That an Effluent Filter Needs to Be Cleaned?
Effluent Filter Cleaning is a Valuable FREE SERVICE we offer when we pump your Septic System
Most effluent filters will rise or begin to float when they need to be cleaned. If yours does not do this, the manufacturer will recommend a frequency, such as every three or six months, for when the filter should be cleaned by.
Under normal conditions, your effluent filter should function several years before cleaning is necessary. At a minimum, the filter should be cleaned whenever the tank is pumped. Lentz Septic Tank Service offers FREE Effluent Filter Cleaning when we pump your tank!
How Often Does an Effluent Filter Need to Be Replaced?
An effluent filter should be replaced if it is becoming brittle, has cracked, is twisted or damaged, is no longer catching waste or is showing signs of wear. When in doubt, throw it out.
